Happy February!

The fourth grade class has been so busy! We are working very hard in our academic studies. We are reading interesting stories about survival in reading. We are beginning a new unit in math on fractions, chance, and probability. Our weekly lessons in spelling and our in-depth study of grammar keep us busy, as well. The fourth grade class is learning all fifty states and their capitals in social studies, which includes map locations of each state and the correct spelling of each state and capital. We are all looking forward to our class trip this spring to our own state capital, Trenton! In science, we are currently studying a unit about plants. Students are working on making plant terrariums at home. They will  be growing roots, stems, and leaves from a sweet potato next month after our “Best-Dressed Potato Contest”. The class will also plant flowers and vegetables in class to take home and plant  in the ground later this spring.

The fourth grade class is continuing its “Orangutan Project” with   the Philadelphia Zoo through the end of February. Our class raised $298.48 toward the class’ adoption of an orangutan through generous donations and our class bake sale. Way to go, 4th Grade!

We are continuing our Pen Pal Project with Mrs. Wilson’s fourth grade class at Cumberland Christian School in Vineland. We write  to each other periodically about what we are doing in our classes and schools. We hope to visit their class one afternoon this spring to do an activity with them and share a treat!

We have now finished gathering our research for our annual fourth grade research papers. Most students have now begun writing  their rough drafts. We have learned about thesis statements, outlines, and writing information we have found in our own words. It is definitely a long process, but all students are doing a great job!
